BŌ

INSTRUMENTS BUILT FROM THE PLAYER OUTWARD.

BŌ is an instrument design platform founded by saxophonist, composer and instrument technician Logan Richardson, bringing the knowledge of the player, repair bench and design laboratory into the development of contemporary saxophones.

Developed within the research ecosystem of Bōjutsu R&D Labs LA, BŌ approaches the saxophone as a complete acoustic system. Geometry, materials, ergonomics, mechanical response and resonance are considered in relation to one another—and, ultimately, in relation to the body of the player.

The work begins with a simple principle: an instrument should not require the musician to fight it. Response, projection and resonance should emerge from the architecture of the instrument itself, allowing the player’s energy to remain focused on sound and expression.

BŌ LA SAXELLO

The BŌ LA Copper Soprano Saxello represents the first instrument expression of this philosophy: a distinctive curved soprano platform developed around response, projection, physical balance and a direct relationship between breath and sound.

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY

BŌ begins with the player. The instrument is approached not as a collection of independent components, but as a complete acoustic and mechanical system connecting breath, body, material and sound.

Every design decision is considered through that relationship. Geometry influences resonance. Materials influence response. Keywork influences physical movement. Balance influences how the instrument becomes an extension of the player rather than an object the player must overcome.

This philosophy comes from Richardson’s experience on both sides of the instrument—as a performing saxophonist and as a woodwind technician. The repair bench provides information that performance alone cannot reveal; the bandstand reveals what measurements alone cannot explain.

BŌ brings those two forms of knowledge together. Tradition provides the foundation, while research, prototyping and direct playing experience create the possibility for something new.

The objective is not complexity. It is freedom: less resistance between intention and sound.

DESIGNED FROM THE PLAYER OUTWARD.

THE INSTRUMENT

BŌ LA Copper Soprano Saxello translates the BŌ design philosophy into a physical instrument. Built around a distinctive curved soprano form, the saxello combines acoustic projection, responsive keywork and physical balance with a copper-brass alloy construction developed for a rich, immediate tonal response.

A solid one-piece bent neck creates a continuous relationship between mouthpiece, air column and body, while the instrument’s geometry is designed to provide the player with immediacy across the register. The objective is a soprano voice capable of intimacy at low dynamics while retaining presence, depth and projection as the sound expands.

Each BŌ LA is individually numbered as part of a limited production of 2,500 instruments worldwide.

BŌJUTSU R&D

The development of BŌ extends into Bōjutsu R&D Labs LA, the research arm of Logan Richardson Studios dedicated to acoustic research, instrument design, prototyping and applied technology.

Bōjutsu investigates the systems surrounding the saxophone—from resonance and internal geometry to materials, mechanical interfaces and emerging technologies. Physical prototypes are developed, tested through performance and refined through an iterative relationship between the laboratory, repair bench and bandstand.

This research allows BŌ to remain an evolving instrument platform rather than a static product. New information gathered through playing, measurement and experimentation can inform future components, instruments and acoustic systems.

AMPLIFICATION THROUGH GEOMETRY, NOT FORCE.
